امم يختلف السسكن لو كان للطلاب أو عام ..
Finding a place to live is almost always tough work, particularly in a city like Munich where accommodation supply is much lower than its demand. It can be one of the most critical issues that our new colleagues will face, and most probably one of the most stressful moment it will create. The purpose of this page is to share the know-how in finding places with our newcomers. There are mainly two options that you can take, applying for a student dormitory or finding a place in private.
# General Tips:
If you are not a German speaker, Google Translate will be the most faithful friend you will ever find to tackle this issue. Please don't hesitate to contact with your potential landlords, even though these websites are written in German. Many of residences in Munich, especially the younger ones, can communicate more or less in English.
In fact, you must contact with the landlords as soon as possible, if you are lucky to find good ones; it might be seen not that argent especially at the beginning, but please be aware that some of us needed to see 10 - 20 places with possible interviews. This is a tough competition we are now talking about here.
For CSE students who have most of the lectures in Garching campus (approx. 30+ min away from the city centre) and they can be started as early as 8:30am, living in places somewhere on U6 will be ideal for many of us; you will not need to change U-bahn in the morning which makes much more significant difference than what you can imagine now. The trains to Garching can be busy too; you wouldn't be pleased to change the trains and chasing for a seat every time you do so.
# How to find a WG?
The majority of the CSE students live in dorms, but maybe some of you would like to live in a WG ( it's just the short version of "Wohngemeinschaft"), that is simply a flatshare. I tell you that is not going to be easy! You have to run around the city a lot, make a lot of phone call, send a lot of emails!
FIND A WG: You can search in the list of link that you have seen before, don't worry if you don't speak German, you can reply also in English, you just need to understand the basic words of the add!
THE FIRST EMAIL: In Munich you'll have a lot of competitors for the apartment, so the first email is really important. You have to quickly present yourself, what you study, where are you from, age and also maybe some personal info (hobbies, already experience in flatshare & co.), just to give your, hopefully, future flatmates thousands of good reason to pick you!
BEST PERIOD: I personally found my WG at the beginning of July, and I decided to pay also August to be sure to have a good apartment in a good position, not so expensive. Don't wait till last minute (end of September/October)!
COST: the 90% of the rooms are between 300/400 euros per month. And in most cases you have to pay 1/3 months of caution.
GOOD LUCK!
