Dear Students,

As you would be aware, a growing number of swine flu cases have been
identified in Victoria. Last night, Swinburne became aware that a casual
staff member who taught a class of six students at our Croydon TAFE Campus
last Saturday has been diagnosed with swine flu. This teacher is believed
to have been exposed to the virus while teaching at a school in Melbourne's
northern suburbs. The teacher has suffered mild flu symptoms, but is
otherwise well. The Department of Human Services has contacted the six
students who were in the class.

Although it is important to be vigilant about swine flu, there is no need
for alarm.

In line with Government guidelines, Swinburne has adopted a preventative
approach to minimise the impact swine flu in the community. Health authorities ask that we all follow precautionary measures. These include:

- Covering the nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.
- Throwing the tissue in a plastic-lined rubbish bin after use.
- Washing hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or
sneezing. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
- Avoiding touching the eyes, nose or mouth.
- Avoiding spitting.
- Staying home if sick.

If you exhibit flu symptoms (fever, cough and fatigue) you should contact
your doctor.
