Morgantown: The City
Just a stone's throw from our Downtown Campus is Morgantown's thriving downtown. Restaurants, shops, banks and public parking areas are located on Spruce Street, High Street and University Avenue. Recently, the city has begun several riverfront developments near the Monongahela River, with the largest building in town, the Radisson Hotel, being built next to the new WVU Foundation building, One Waterfront Place. The focal point of the Wharf District is the paved trail that runs along the river for miles, providing a good place to in-line skate, walk or cycle. It connects with the WVU Arboretum on the Evansdale Campus. Morgantown is America's most livable small city, according to 2000 Demographics Daily, an on-line newsletter produced by bizjournals.com. Also, The Rating Guide to Life in America's Small Cities (1988) rated Morgantown the No. 1 small city in the east and third-best "micropolitan" in the nation. Our town was one of five U.S. cities to receive the 1998 Great American Main Street Award for downtown revitalization. In 2000, Main Street Morgantown also won the top state award for the third time and Parenting magazine's Offspring.com, ranked Monongalia County as having one of the nation's Top 100 school districts.
