    Hi everyone ,

I really need your help. Sisters and brothers , I have been awarded a government scholarship to undertake a postgraduate study in Linguistics. I had already applied to a university in the UK. The university I had applied to offered me a place to study MA in Applied Linguistics for Translation. I have spoken to a friend of mine about this major and he strongly criticized me for choosing the above-mentioned major. He thinks it is better to major in Pure Applied Linguistics . Moreover , he believes majoring in Applied Linguistics for Translation will narrow my chances to be a lecturer in any university . He says if a university has a vacancy for a lecturer of linguistics , the university ,without any doubt , will choose applicants with MA in Pure Applied Linguistics. Dear brothers and sister , please compare the two majors in terms of their modules and tell me if you agree or disagree to my friend's point of view . Here you are the details of each major :

    1-Applied Linguistics : A : Compulsory Modules : 1-foundations of linguistics 1 ( 15 credits )2-foundations of linguistics 2 ( 15 credits )3-psycholinguistics ( 15 credits )4- research methods in linguistics and language teaching ( 15 credits ) 5-Second language acquisition ( 15 credits )B : Optional Modules ( must choose three modules )1- English for academic purposes ( 15 credits )2- Grammar and vocabulary in ELT ( 15 credits )3- Computers in ELT ( 15 credits )4- Materials evaluation and adaptation ( 15 credits )5- Inter-cultural in ELT ( 15 credits )6- Practice of English language teaching ( 15 credits )7- Language skills in ELT ( 15 credits )8- Teaching approaches and syllabus design ( 15 credits )C: MA Dissertation ( 60 credits ) ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..2-Applied Linguistics for Translation : A : Compulsory Modules : 1-foundations of linguistics1 ( 15 credits )2-foundations of linguistics 2 ( 15 credits )3-psycholinguistics ( 15 credits )4- specialized translation with translation technology ( 30 credits ) 5-Second language acquisition ( 15 credits )6- Lexicography and terminology ( 15 credits )B : Optional Modules ( must choose one modules )1- Research methods in linguistics and teaching ( 15 credits )2- Research methodologies and approaches in translation and interpreting studies ( 15 credits )3- Translation project management and professional skills C: MA Dissertation or translation project ( 60 credits )
