Essex has reconfirmed its position as the
UK's leading university in the social sciences with
Politics and
Sociology ranked in
first position,
Economics in
third position and
Linguistics in
fourth position nationally.
Essex Business School was ranked second best in the UK in the Accounting and Finance subject area. History was also ranked second crowning a strong performance in the Humanities with Art History ninth and Philosophy joint tenth.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Colin Riordan said: 'These outstanding results confirm Essex's position in the UK's research elite. Although a relatively small university, Essex has demonstrated world-leading research quality across a broad range of subjects. This expertise will continue to be applied both to teaching our students from around the world and addressing global challenges.'

As you've recently expressed an interest in the University of Essex, we thought we'd share our good news with you. The results of the UK-wide Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), published yesterday (18 December), reveal that almost a quarter of the University's research is rated as world-leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour.
Essex Business School was ranked second best in the UK in the Accounting and Finance subject area. History was also ranked second crowning a strong performance in the Humanities with Art History ninth and Philosophy joint tenth.
